Ars memorandi - Gates to the past

Memento Mori és Ars Memorandi
Vác, Március 15. tér 19.
Entrance from the doorway.

The collection of finds unearthed from the crypt of the Church of the Whites on the Main Square in Vác was one of the biggest Hungarian scientific sensations of the 1990s. The exhibition of the finds is very popular, both among domestic and foreign visitors. However, the exhibition only presents a small cross-section of the rich material.

Our new permanent exhibition, connected to the Memento Mori exhibition and partly based on the material from the Dominican crypt, mainly presents the life of a multicultural city that was resettled after the Turkish occupation. A modern urban history presentation has been created in the space created in the 18th-century townhouse on the main square, which also houses an exhibition of crypt finds.

The exhibition presents the history of the settlement from the post-Turkish resettlement to the development of the 18th-century society and institutional system, to the construction and flourishing of the Baroque city - not primarily focusing on the history of events, but on society and lifestyle.

The exhibition presents a number of objects and ensembles that have never been presented to the general public before. For example, the wealth of forms and motifs from the vast material of a multi-generational 18th century Vác pottery workshop, some recently restored historical artifacts, and several still unknown pieces from the crypt finds are also included. The chapter presenting the 18th century city history is interwoven with the material and documents of the citizens of Vác buried in the Dominican crypt, and a glimpse into their lives and activities. The life of the city is presented through the example of its citizens buried in the Dominican crypt, filtered through their life paths and destinies.

Our exhibition opens the door to one of the most important periods in Vác's past.
